Sailing on Chesapeake BayHistory


English pioneer and surveyor William Claiborne is the first person to set foot in the Eastern Shore area in 1629, having gotten a land grant from the Colony of Virginia. He named his land Kent County. In 1631, he sailed north up Chesapeake Bay to the area known today as Kent Island, and formed the first English settlement within the province of Maryland. Throughout the 17th and into the 18th century, subsequent counties were formed including Talbot County in 1661, Somerset County in 1666, Cecil County in 1674, Queen Anne's County in 1706, and Worcester County in 1742. Wicomico County was the last, formed in 1867.
